About four months ago, I learned of a family friend who had inherited a warehouse full of motorcycles and shop tools and was looking to sell. I’m not a moto guy, but I appreciate the moto aesthetic, especially when it comes to vintage bikes, and it turned out there were 2 vintage, single-owner, BMW airheads in that warehouse. The bikes have quite a history and an original owner with a 700,000-mile award from BMWMOA. I could have grabbed them for myself, but the reality is I don’t need another hobby, and I don’t have the garage space to rebuild them now. I sent a random e-mail to my old roommate, from the Bike mag days, Chris Lesser, who owns Union Garage NYC. We chatted & schemed for several months, I got him in touch with the bike’s owners, negotiations were made, and finally, after several months, he trekked across the country to see them in person. I helped him get them out of storage and photographed them while they went through some basic maintenance to make them roadworthy. It’s exciting to see a vintage collectible passed on to the right person, and I am stoked to see what adventures and stories these bikes get into next!
